Donation to Honor Racers

October, 2002 Indianapolis, IN -
Super Stock racer Robert Burgin presented a check for $5,000 to the Drag Racing Association of Women at the US Nationals in honor of his teammates Charles Lackey, Mike Pustelny, Melvin Davis and Pete Beauregard. Robert was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the mid 1990's and chose not to disclose the diagnosis to others. MS is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord with no known cure.

As a teenager Robert dreamed of driving a Super Stock car in national competition. His teammates were very supportive in helping him accomplish that dream even though they were unaware of his medical condition. At the end of the racing season in October 2001 Robert disclosed the diagnosis to family and friends. With advancing disability and the side effects of drug therapy Robert stopped racing. He returned to the US Nationals after a ten month break and went to the quarterfinals in Super Stock.

"Drag racing has been a wonderful experience. I'm fortunate to have met so many great people over the last five years. A good example is the volunteers at DRAW. I realized how hard they work to provide support to injured racers. This donation is an opportunity to honor my teammates for all they have done for me and to help a great organization at the same time."

It was not a bad weekend on the racetrack either for Freddie's Club as Kalivoda qualified a career-best eighth in the Top Fuel field and notched his first professional elimination round win in front of his hometown crowd.
